Letter/envelope set from the Los Angeles Jewish Community Center shooter.
This auction is for a letter from Los Angeles Jewish Community Center shooter Buford O'Neal Furrow, Jr. On 8/10/1999, Buford Furrow fired 70 rounds with a machine gun into the North Valley Jewish Community Center in Los Angele County, hitting five individuals, including several children. He then killed a postal employee delivering mail, based on his non-white appearance and being a federal employee. He was motivated by racial and religious bigotry. Buford Furrow would flee to Nevada, only to turn himself in to the FBI. He confessed to his crimes. When prosecutors elected to seek the death penalty at trial, Buford Furrow agreed to plead guilty to a host of federal charges in exchange for life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
ITEM DESCRIPTION: The missive is four pages on four sheets, dated 10/25/2006, and is signed, "Buford Furrow." Furrow explains his crimes in the letter, "My breakdown happened due to several things. Marriage breakup, job loss, gambling habit, mother dying all in a short time period. I was already suffering severe panic attacks every 3 days and was very depressed, so I decided to let the police kill me. I drove to Ca. ad did something to make sure they did. The whole thing is sick and crazy when I look back, but I did try to get help, but I was dismissed. It happened in L.A. Aug 10, 99. Like I said, it was a tragedy for all concerned, and a burden I must bear the rest of my days." The original mailing envelope is postmarked 10/26/2006. The letter and envelope come inside a protective magazine sleeve with an acid free board and have been stored flat. Message me with any questions you might have. Thanks for having a look-see.
