Born in 1963, American serial killer Christine Laverne Falling is well-known for killing three children she was watching between 1980 and 1982. Her father was older than her mother, and she experienced poverty and mental health problems as a child. Because her family was unable to care for her, Falling, who had epilepsy, was placed in several orphanages. Her mental health was further complicated by multiple hospitalizations for inexplicable ailments following a violent relationship with a six-year-old man. Falling started watching kids for friends and neighbors, which led to the deaths of four-year-old Jeffrey Davis and Joseph Spring, as well as two-year-old Cassidy Johnson. Despite working as a hospital assistant in 1981, Falling was still linked to mysterious fatalities. Falling avoided the capital penalty and was given a life sentence in 1982 after entering a guilty plea to the killings. Another parole hearing is planned for later this year, and she is still jailed at Lowell Correctional Institution.
I don’t know why I done what I done.
The way I done it, I seen it done on TV shows.
I had my own way though.
Simple and easy.
No one could hear them scream.

Background Information
Christine Laverne Falling, born on March 12, 1963, is an American serial killer known for the murders of three children she was babysitting between 1980 and 1982. Her early life was marked by significant challenges, including poverty and mental health issues. She was the youngest child in a family where her father was significantly older than her mother, leading to a tumultuous upbringing. Falling’s childhood experiences included time spent in orphanages due to her family’s inability to care for her.
Early Life and Mental Health Issues
Falling’s childhood was characterized by instability; she suffered from epilepsy and was considered mentally challenged. Her parents’ financial struggles led to her being placed in various orphanages. During this time, she exhibited troubling behaviors, such as harming animals, which is often seen as a precursor to violent behavior in later life. At age 14, she was forced into a marriage with a man who was six years older than her, but this relationship ended quickly due to violence and conflict.
Following the divorce, Falling experienced numerous hospitalizations for unexplained ailments over two years. These episodes contributed to her reputation as a hypochondriac and further complicated her mental health.
Murders Committed
Falling began babysitting for neighbors and friends as a means of earning money. The first known victim under her care was two-year-old Cassidy Johnson, who died on February 28, 1980. An autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to the skull; however, Falling claimed that Cassidy had fallen from her crib. Despite suspicions from medical professionals, the case was closed without further investigation.
Shortly after moving to Lakeland, Florida, Falling cared for four-year-old Jeffrey Davis and his cousin Joseph Spring. Both children died under suspicious circumstances while in her care—Jeffrey from myocarditis (a heart condition) and Joseph shortly thereafter from what doctors attributed to a viral infection.
In July 1981, after returning to Perry, Florida, Falling worked as a nursing assistant but continued to be associated with unexplained deaths. Notably, on July 2, 1982, ten-week-old Travis Coleman died while under her supervision; an autopsy revealed signs of suffocation.
During police interrogation following Travis’s death, Falling confessed to killing three children due to auditory hallucinations instructing her to “kill the baby.” This confession led to charges against her for the murders of Cassidy Johnson and Travis Coleman among others.
Legal Proceedings and Imprisonment
In December 1982, Christine Falling pleaded guilty to the murders of Cassidy Johnson and Travis Coleman. Her confession played a crucial role in avoiding the death penalty; instead, she received a life sentence in prison. After serving 25 years of incarceration at Lowell Correctional Institution in Ocala, Florida, she became eligible for parole but faced rejection during hearings due to lack of support from family or friends.
Falling’s case remains notable not only for its tragic outcomes but also for raising questions about mental health treatment and child protection measures during the late 20th century.
Current Status
As of January 2025, Christine Laverne Falling remains incarcerated at Lowell Correctional Institution with another parole hearing scheduled for later this year.
