Conner Lee Kobold, a 19-year-old man from Valparaiso, Indiana, has been accused of the tragic crime of murdering his own mother. The incident took place after his mother, Shanelle Burns-Cook, who held a high position at Loyola University Chicago, served him with an eviction notice. Kobold is facing serious charges, including attempted murder, aggravated battery, and strangulation. He is currently being held at the Porter County Jail.
When Kobold tries to be his own lawyer, Superior Court Judge Michael Fish calls in a mental health professional to investigate his competence.
“I would like Dr. Popli to give his opinion on whether you are capable of representing yourself,” Fish said Friday.
Fish asked: “I think the most important thing I have to do is make sure you understand that the penalty for murder is 45 to 65 years. Do you understand that?”
“Yes, Your Highness,” said Kobold.

Conner
Lee Kobold’s motive for the attack seems to be linked to the
eviction notice served by his mother, Shanelle Burns-Cook. According
to reports, she had given him 30 days to meet certain conditions,
including getting a job, cleaning his room, and helping with the
common areas of the home, to avoid eviction. Unfortunately, the
situation escalated, leading to the tragic incident.
Prior
to the tragic incident, the relationship between Conner and his
mother appeared strained due to household responsibilities and
expectations. His mother had issued him an eviction notice with
specific conditions he had to fulfill to remain at home. These
conditions included getting a job, cleaning his room, and helping
with the common areas of the house. Despite this, Shanelle Burns-Cook
is remembered as a witty, kind, and creative person who enjoyed
traveling and had several creative abilities, including playing the
piano and writing. The situation, unfortunately, escalated, leading
to the incident.
Authorities
discovered Shanelle Burns-Cook’ body after Conner
called 911 multiple times. When police arrived at their home they
found her unconscious with serious injuries. Signs of a struggle were
evident, with furniture displaced, and she was found without
breathing or a pulse. During the 911 call, Conner remained calm and
composed. Kobold reportedly told the dispatcher, “I need you to
send a police car here right now,” and later admitted to an
officer, “Yeah, I killed somebody in that house.”
