Birthday card/envelope from serial killer Carl Eugene Watts.
This auction is for a handmade birthday card from Carl Eugene Watts, also known as Coral Watts (11/7/1953 – 9/21/2007). Between 1974 to 1982, Coral Watts raped, tortured, and murdered 22 women. Authorities speculate Coral Watts may have killed in the upwards of 100 victims. Originally sentenced to 60 years in Texas, but due to terrible law writing, and an even more terrible plea deal given by prosecutors, Carol Watts was eligible for early release. As a model prisoner he would end up severing only a third of his time. Before he was to be paroled he was charged with several murders out of Michigan, where he would ultimately be sentenced to life without parole. Coral Watts died of cancer on 9/21/2007. He was 53.
ITEM DESCRIPTION: The card is done on art paper with ink and color pencil, the inscription is on a sheet of paper affixed to the art paper the artwork is on, dated 7/5/1997 and signed both, "Carol E. Watts," and again, "Carol." The card measures 6"×9' when closed and is actually kind of crafty one might say. I can't be 100% positive that the artwork was done by Watts, but I've gone through several pieces of mail I have here and it seems doing artwork was a major topic of discussion with the original recipient. There is a small T.D.C.J. GENERAL INMATE CORRESPONDENCE slip that accompanied the card included. The original mailing envelope is postmarked 7/5/1997. The card and envelope come inside a protective magazine sleeve with an acid free board and have been stored flat, the card itself has been kept close. Message me with any questions you might have. Thanks for having a look-see.
