Unsigned 8.5"×11" drawing by the West Memphis Three child murderer.
This auction is for an unsigned piece of artwork by Arkansas child murderer Damien Echols. On 5/5/1993, Damien Echols, with accomplices Jesse Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin, tortured and raped three young boys in West Memphis, in a ritualistic styled murder. The three would be arrested, with Jesse Misskelley quickly confessing. Damien Echols was sentenced to death for his role in the crimes, with Jesse Misskelley and Jason Baldwin receiving life sentences. After the trial the case gained national media attention. Supports of the West Memphis Three cited Jesse Misskelley being "slow" and his confession was manipulated by the police. That's well and good, except Jesse Misskelley gave roughly the same confession over and over and over. There were additional factors that were also extremely suspect. With growing support and a top-notch legal team, prosecutors offered a the three an Alford plea, which would afford them their freedom. The West Memphis Three were released on 8/19/2011.
