Card/envelope from the deceased assassin of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This auction is for a Christmas card from deceased Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. assassin James Earl Ray (3/10/1928 - 4/23/1998). On 4/4/1968, James Earl Ray would assassinate Dr. King at the Lorraine Motel in Tennessee. He would be arrested 6/8/1968 in connection with the murder. He would ultimately plead guilty, recanting his confession shortly thereafter. He was sentenced to 99 years. Theories began to circulate that James Earl Ray was a patsy and that Dr. King was assassinated in a large government conspiracy. James Earl Ray experienced freedom briefly in June of 1977 when he and seven fellow inmates escaped from prison. James Earl Ray died on 4/23/1998. He was 70.
ITEMS DESCRIPTION: The Christmas card is dated 12/1990 and signed, "J.E. Ray," at the top, and initialed, "J.E.R." at the bottom. The original mailing envelope is postmarked 12/11/1990 with a prison stamp on the reverse.
