Larry Dean Bright, born in 1966 in Peoria, Illinois, was a notorious serial murderer who perpetrated at least eight violent murders of Black female sex workers in central Illinois between 2003 and 2004. His harsh techniques included burning their bodies and smashing their bone fragments with a hammer, garnering him the moniker "The Bonecrusher." His reign of terror created dread among the population, resulting in heightened police presence and substantial disruptions to daily activities.
Bright was captured following an extensive investigation into the disappearances of several women in the area. In May 2005, he admitted his acts and was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder. In 2006, he pleaded guilty to eight counts of murder and received a life sentence without parole.
Larry Dean Bright's case stunned Peoria and drew attention from outside Illinois because to its severity and the victims' fragility. As of December 2024, he is still confined in an Illinois state prison, serving his life sentence.
He was one of the few serial killers who chose victims outside of his race.
