Ralph Allan Lee Shortey (born 1982) is an American politician who began his political career in 2002 and was elected to the Oklahoma Senate in 2010. Shortey was known for promoting family values and adopting strong conservative stances on subjects such as illegal immigration and gun regulation. Shortey was accused in March 2017 with three felony counts of soliciting prostitution from a minor after being discovered in a motel room with a 17-year-old male. He resigned from the Senate on March 22, 2017. In September 2018, a federal grand jury accused Shortey on four charges of child sex trafficking and child pornography. He pleaded guilty to one count of child sex trafficking and received a 15-year sentence followed by ten years of supervised release. Shortey married his high school girlfriend Jennifer, with whom he had four children, but they split in 2018 due to his legal issues.

Former Oklahoma
senator and businessman Ralph Allan Lee Shortey, a Republican Party
member, served until 2017. He represented the 44th district in
Oklahoma and was known for his hard-line views on immigration and
social issues. Shortey sponsored proposals related to limiting
abortion and tightening immigration regulations based on his
political beliefs. In 2017, he was accused of a number of serious
felonies, including child sex trafficking and the production of child
pornography. Prosecutors accused Shortey of using the social media
app Kik, representing himself by the name of “Jamie Tilley”, the
previous day to offer a gay rent boy money in exchange for sex.
Shortey pleaded guilty to one count of child sex trafficking as part
of a plea deal and was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison in
September 2018. His case had a tremendous impact on Oklahoma
politics, raising concerns about responsibility and ethics among
public leaders. The media extensively covered his trial and
punishment, leading to debates about the importance of increased
oversight and ethical standards for elected officials. Shortey's
transition from state senator to convicted felon underscores the
importance of integrity, ethical behavior in public service, and the
severe consequences of illegal actions, especially those affecting
vulnerable individuals.
Born in 1982, Ralph Allan Lee
Shortey grew up on an Indian reservation in South Dakota, where he
faced challenges including drug addiction and poverty. At the age of
three, he underwent surgery and experienced bullying at school due to
his stutter and weight. Despite this, he graduated from Westmoore
High School and went to Heartland Baptist Bible College. Shortey
started politics as a Republican and was elected to Oklahoma's Senate
in 2010. He served till 2017 and was noted for his strict immigration
and social policies. Shortey was married with four daughters and
engaged in various business endeavors.
Shortey was
sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for child sex trafficking, a
serious criminal violation that violates human rights. His activities
influenced his former state senator position as well as a breach of
the public trust. Shortey's plea agreement resulted in the dismissal
of other charges linked to child pornography, securing a significant
sentence without a lengthy trial. The sentence is intended to deter
others while also protecting vulnerable youngsters from harm. U.S.
District Judge Timothy DeGiusti underscored the gravity of the crime
and the importance of justice for the victim. These elements resulted
in a lengthy prison sentence for Shortey, reflecting the gravity of
his offenses and the broader ramifications for public confidence and
safety.
Shortey's family faced significant emotional and
legal consequences following his public charges. His wife filed for
divorce in 2018, and Shortey granted her permission to change her and
their four children's last names, indicating a desire to distance
themselves from the scandal. Shortey publicly apologized to his
family during his sentence, acknowledging the pain and embarrassment
caused by his actions. The high-profile nature of the case likely
resulted in significant media attention, prompting Shortey's family
to change their last names as a measure to protect their privacy.
This highlights the far-reaching consequences of Shortey's actions.
