Background Information

Rodney Troy Bixler, born in September 1968, is an American serial killer and rapist. He committed a series of violent crimes in Kentucky between February and October 2000, which led to the deaths of three women. His criminal history includes not only murder but also various sexual offenses.

Criminal Activities

Bixler’s criminal activities began to escalate significantly in 2000. On February 4, he strangled Thelma Cornett, a 67-year-old woman, in her apartment in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. This marked the beginning of a series of violent acts that would culminate in multiple murders.

In addition to Cornett’s murder, Bixler was suspected but never charged with the drowning of a 13-year-old girl named Stephanie Ann Claunch on July 25, 2000. On August 5, he raped another woman from Lexington, attempted to strangle her, and subsequently set fire to her bedroom. These actions demonstrated a pattern of escalating violence and disregard for human life.

On October 7, Bixler murdered Heather Wright, a 27-year-old sex worker; her body was later discovered in a stream leading into the Kentucky River. Just weeks later, on October 22, he killed another elderly woman, Daisy Whitaker, again strangling her and stealing her car afterward.

Arrest and Charges

Bixler was arrested on November 1, 2000. Initially charged with the murder of Daisy Whitaker, he faced additional charges related to sexual assaults against teenage girls. The evidence against him was largely circumstantial; however, it was sufficient for law enforcement to pursue serious charges.

Trial and Sentencing

In 2003, Bixler pleaded guilty to several rape charges stemming from his attacks on young girls and received a five-year sentence for those crimes. Later that year, he was convicted of murder for Whitaker’s death; the jury recommended a total sentence combining both his murder conviction (25 years) and theft (5 years), resulting in a total of 29 years imprisonment.

In subsequent years, Bixler continued to face legal repercussions for his actions. In 2005, he pleaded guilty to second-degree arson related to an assault case that did not result in death but involved significant violence. He received an additional ten-year sentence as part of this plea deal.

In 2008, Bixler entered an Alford plea regarding the murders of Cornett and Wright – this type of plea allows defendants to maintain their innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors have enough evidence for conviction if the case were to go to trial. For these two murders combined with previous sentences from other convictions, he received two consecutive twenty-year sentences.

Current Status

As of now, Rodney Bixler is serving his sentences at Northpoint Training Center in Kentucky. He will be eligible for parole on January 29, 2024. If he is not granted parole at that time and maintains good behavior throughout his incarceration period, he is scheduled for release on September 21, 2039. However, if there are issues with his behavior or parole application process during his time served until then or any further legal complications arise before that date could extend his imprisonment until March 3, 2045.
