Aniya Day-Garrett's mother, Sierra Day, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for her daughter's murder. The case, which received widespread media coverage, exposed systemic flaws in child protective services. Sierra Day's relationship with Aniya's biological father, Mickhal Garrett, prompted numerous reports of abuse, but authorities did not discover enough evidence to remove Aniya from her custody. Aniya's health rapidly deteriorated when Sierra began dating Deonte Lewis in 2017. After Aniya died, Day and Lewis were arrested and charged with aggravated murder. The jury found Day guilty and sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case underlined the need for better child protection procedures.

Sierra Day: Overview and Background
Sierra Day is the mother of Aniya Day-Garrett, a 4-year-old girl who tragically lost her life due to abuse and neglect. Sierra Day was involved in a high-profile criminal case that resulted in her being sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of her daughter. The case drew significant media attention and highlighted systemic failures in child protective services.
Relationship with Aniya’s Father
Sierra Day had a relationship with Mickhal Garrett, Aniya’s biological father. After their separation, Mickhal sought custody of Aniya due to concerns about her well-being under Sierra’s care. He reported signs of abuse, such as bruises and marks on Aniya, to child protective services multiple times. Despite these reports, the authorities did not find sufficient evidence to remove Aniya from Sierra’s custody.
Abuse and Neglect
The abuse began after Sierra started dating Deonte Lewis in 2017. Family members noticed that Aniya had black eyes, rug burns, and other injuries. Her health deteriorated significantly; she became weak, lost motor skills, and could not walk properly. Despite repeated reports from Mickhal Garrett about suspected abuse, Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services closed all cases as unsubstantiated.
The burn marks on Aniya Day-Garrett’s body were found on her right ankle. These marks appeared to have blistered, popped open, and dried, indicating they were not recent injuries. The exact cause of these burn marks was not definitively determined during the investigation, but they were consistent with the pattern of abuse and neglect she suffered over time.
Aniya’s Death
Aniya suffered a fatal stroke after being repeatedly punched in the head by Sierra and Deonte. On March 11, 2018, paramedics were called to their apartment where they found Aniya unresponsive with burn marks on her body. She was pronounced dead at Euclid General Hospital shortly thereafter. The Medical Examiner determined that she died from blunt impact trauma to her head combined with malnutrition.
Aniya Day-Garrett was determined to be severely malnourished and weighed just 26 pounds when she died. Her body mass index was approximately 11, suggesting severe malnutrition. She had a black eye, blisters, and bed sores, and her lungs were failing. She developed pancreatitis as a result of a lack of food, as well as stomach ulcers, which are frequently connected with acute stress and starvation.
The autopsy found that Aniya had been subjected to continuous physical abuse, as evidenced by her numerous injuries and general bodily condition. Bed sores indicated that she had been lying in a urine-soaked bed for a lengthy period of time. The vivid nature of the autopsy findings, as well as Dr. Felo's testimony, had a strong emotional impact on the jurors, who were visibly shaken and in tears when shown the autopsy images.
Legal Proceedings
Following Aniya’s death, both Sierra Day and Deonte Lewis were arrested and charged with aggravated murder among other charges related to child abuse. During the trial presided over by Judge Timothy McCormick, thirty-eight witnesses testified over six days. The jury delivered a guilty verdict within 24 hours after closing arguments concluded.
Sierra Day was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for her role in the murder of her daughter. Her boyfriend Deonte Lewis received a life sentence with eligibility for parole after serving 20 years.
Impact Statement
During sentencing hearings, Mickhal Garrett delivered an emotional victim impact statement expressing his grief and disbelief at how Sierra could harm their daughter so severely.
Systemic Failures
This case brought attention to potential failures within child protective services systems that failed to act on multiple reports of suspected abuse against Aniya despite visible signs observed by family members and daycare workers.
