Schlegel, a teacher at Severna Park Elementary School, has been
charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse involving minors. He was
charged on May 16, 2024, with a total of 36 counts, including charges
of sexual abuse and other offenses. Later, he was indicted on a total
of 55 charges, including 11 counts of child sex abuse, and 20 of
those charges are felonies. The allegations state that the abuse
occurred in his classroom during school hours over a two-year period
from 2022 to 2024.
Online court records show that Schlegel
of Severna Park faces 36 charges, including offenses ranging from
second-degree assault to sex abuse of minors. The records allege that
the encounters happened from August 2022 to March 2024, spanning a
period of 20 months.
The charging documents accuse the
third-grade teacher of abusing his current and former students during
his math class at Severna Park Elementary School. The alleged victims
accused Schlegel of touching them inappropriately. Witnesses reported
seeing the victims sitting on Schlegel’s lap during class, which
raised concerns.
Court records say Schlegel is up against
seven counts each of sex abuse of a minor, third-degree sex offense,
fourth-degree sex offense (sexual contact), and fourth-degree sex
offense (person of authority). He is also charged with eight counts
of second-degree assault, in addition to the other
offenses.
Schlegel has worked for AACPS since 2008. He
worked at Severna Park Elementary from 2016 until 2024.
