On July 30, 1997, Gwendolyn Wyche was shot multiple times outside her home. The police initially suspected robbery as the motive. Just two days later, Pok Yeo Kim was murdered during a robbery at her workplace; surveillance footage captured the assailant’s image.

The investigation into these murders led police to connect the last two victims. They released surveillance footage to the public seeking information about the suspect. A tip from a woman identified her son, Charles Lee Duffy, as the man seen in the video. At that time, Duffy was already on probation for previous convictions related to robbery and auto theft.
