Jim Colosimo was one of Chicago's biggest underworld figures at the start of prohibition, having made his money as a pimp. The Colosimo Cafe, which was owned by him, was the top night spot in Chicago, regularly patronized by numerous stars and celebrities including Enrico Caruso and Clarence Darrow. When Capone first arrived in Chicago he went to work for Johnny Torrio, his mentor from Brooklyn, who inherited "Big Jim's" criminal empire after he was assassinated in 1920.
