Kanard Trent Murphy
has been identified as the suspect in a tragic shooting that occurred
on July 4, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas. The incident resulted in the
deaths of 15-month-old Wynter Thouston, 4-year-old Ivy Pierce, and
42-year-old Terrell Winn. The shooting took place outside a car wash
on West Cleburne Road after a fight escalated into gunfire.
Murphy,
who was 26 years old when the incident occurred, is now facing a
capital murder charge. The altercation started between Murphy and one
of the victims, leading to Murphy reportedly opening fire during the
confrontation.
The tragic shooting involving Kanard Trent
Murphy seems to stem from a personal disagreement. According to the
arrest affidavit, Murphy attended a large gathering to see his less
than 1-year-old daughter, who was with her mother at the time.
Previous domestic violence incidents between Murphy and the mother of
his child led to some of her relatives developing animosity towards
him.
Upon his arrival at the party, Murphy was approached
by one of the woman's relatives regarding the alleged past domestic
violence incidents. Initially, Murphy was preparing for a fistfight
after being confronted, but the situation escalated when he put his
child in his car and returned with a rifle. He then began firing at
the relative as he ran away, and during this pursuit, the gunfire
tragically hit the two young girls and another man, leading to their
deaths.
The relative ran toward a parked car in the car
wash parking lot, and as Murphy continued firing at him, he hit the
back of the car several times where the children and their older
sister were seated. The older sister sustained non-life-threatening
injuries, while the two young girls were shot in the torso and later
pronounced dead at the hospital.
A person whom the
witnesses did not know fired at Murphy after the shooting, striking
him in the back and causing him to drop the rifle, according to the
document. A bystander ran and picked up the gun before Murphy could
continue shooting, the witnesses told the detective. Murphy underwent
a medical evaluation at a local hospital. Murphy informed the police
that he deliberately aimed and fired at a specific individual,
acknowledging the lethal consequences of his actions.
