On October 26, 2024, Abbey was located in Butte, Montana, where he was arrested on a probation violation. Following his arrest, he was interviewed by law enforcement on October 29. During this interview, Abbey confessed to killing Kjersem on October 10, claiming it was an act of self-defense.

Confession Details

Abbey’s confession detailed the violent nature of the incident. He stated that he struck Kjersem with a piece of firewood and then stabbed him in the neck with a screwdriver before hitting him in the face with the blunt side of an axe. Furthermore, he admitted to stealing various items from Kjersem’s campsite and washing evidence such as the axe and screwdriver in nearby water.

Abbey also returned to the campsite after the murder under the pretense of retrieving his hat but ended up stealing additional items from Kjersem’s truck and disposing of two phones taken from Kjersem’s tent.

Charges Filed

As a result of these actions and confessions, Daren Christopher Abbey has been formally charged with one count of deliberate homicide and two counts of tampering with or fabricating evidence. His bail was set at $1.5 million during his court appearance on November 1, 2024.
