Eric Hainstock was a student at Weston High School in Cazenovia, Wisconsin. He carried out a fatal school shooting on September 29, 2006, where the principal, John Klang, was killed. Hainstock used a .22 caliber revolver and a 20-gauge shotgun taken from his father’s gun cabinet during the shooting.

Hainstock expressed that bullying he faced at school was the motive behind his actions. He reportedly complained about peer bullying with limited intervention from school faculty. Prior to the shooting, he had received a disciplinary warning from Principal Klang for bringing tobacco to school, which further fueled his actions.

Eric Hainstock, a 16-year-old from Wisconsin will claim he has been the victim of persistent homophobic abuse at school. He was allegedly upset that Weston High School’s principal, John Klang, had done nothing to stop other students from teasing him about his sexuality. The prosecution say that on September 29, 2006, Hainstock, then 15, went to the school before class, armed with a handgun and a rifle. A janitor took the rifle off him after he pointed it at a teacher. A confrontation and struggle with Mr Klang ensued, and the principal was shot three times. He died from his wounds later that day. Hainstock told police that other pupils called him “fag” and “faggot” regularly. Sauk County Circuit Judge Patrick Taggart ruled that Hainstock would stand trial as an adult. If convicted he faces life in jail. Defense lawyers intend to portray him as an immature boy who faced serious abuse at home and at school. He was attending special classes for pupils with emotional and behavioral problems. He had been living with his abusive father who faced charges for child abuse a few years ago.

Eric Hainstock was charged as an adult, found guilty of first-degree intentional homicide, and sentenced to life in prison. There have been legal disputes and appeals regarding his conviction, with discussions on overturning his sentence and potentially granting a new trial.

While incarcerated, Hainstock reflected on his actions, expressed remorse, and took responsibility for the school shooting.
