Relationship with Aniya’s Father

The burn marks on Aniya Day-Garrett’s body were found on her right ankle. These marks appeared to have blistered, popped open, and dried, indicating they were not recent injuries. Aniya’s Death

Aniya suffered a fatal stroke after being repeatedly punched in the head by Sierra and Deonte. On March 11, 2018, paramedics were called to their apartment where they found Aniya unresponsive with burn marks on her body. She was pronounced dead at Euclid General Hospital shortly thereafter. The Medical Examiner determined that she died from blunt impact trauma to her head combined with malnutrition.

Aniya Day-Garrett was determined to be severely malnourished and weighed just 26 pounds when she died. Her body mass index was approximately 11, suggesting severe malnutrition. She had a black eye, blisters, and bed sores, and her lungs were failing. She developed pancreatitis as a result of a lack of food, as well as stomach ulcers, which are frequently connected with acute stress and starvation.

The autopsy found that Aniya had been subjected to continuous physical abuse, as evidenced by her numerous injuries and general bodily condition. Bed sores indicated that she had been lying in a urine-soaked bed for a lengthy period of time. The vivid nature of the autopsy findings, as well as Dr. Felo's testimony, had a strong emotional impact on the jurors, who were visibly shaken and in tears when shown the autopsy images.

Legal Proceedings

Following Aniya’s death, both Sierra Day and Deonte Lewis were arrested and charged with aggravated murder among other charges related to child abuse. During the trial presided over by Judge Timothy McCormick, thirty-eight witnesses testified over six days. The jury delivered a guilty verdict within 24 hours after closing arguments concluded.

Sierra Day was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for her role in the murder of her daughter. Her boyfriend Deonte Lewis received a life sentence with eligibility for parole after serving 20 years.
