Zachary Jarred Walton, a 28-year-old Midvale, Utah resident, has been charged with first-degree felony murder and two counts of second-degree felony aggravated child abuse in connection with the unfortunate death of S.S., a 4-month-old newborn he was babysitting as a babysitter. Walton became frustrated when the infant continued to cry, so he took her to the building's roof to quiet her down.

During the elevator ride, Walton admitted to purposefully hitting the infant's head twice with heavy force, causing serious harm. Surveillance footage showed Walton carrying the newborn around the roof for almost 17 minutes while blowing into her face to resuscitate her. She was eventually transported to the lobby and treated for serious injuries, including skull fractures, cerebral bleeding, and acute and healing rib fractures.

S.S., a 4-month-old newborn, lived with her mother at the Road Home Shelter in Midvale, Utah. Her mother was working for DoorDash at the time of the incident. Walton, who was a family friend, had been babysitting S.S. and her siblings intermittently for about three weeks.

S.S.'s mother, referred to as "S.R." in official documents, knew Zachary Jarred Walton as a family friend. Walton had been helping her by babysitting S.S. and her siblings on several occasions over the past three weeks. S.R. trusted Walton with her children due to his reputation for being good with kids.

Walton faces one count of first-degree felony murder and two counts of second-degree felony aggravated child abuse. Salt Lake County District Attorney, Sim Gill, emphasized the preventable nature of the tragedy and his commitment to seeking justice for the young victim and her family.

This case underscores the severe outcomes of child maltreatment and the importance of seeking assistance when caring for children. As a result of Walton's actions, a tragic loss occurred, and the legal process will determine the extent of his accountability for this unfortunate incident.
