Born in 1964, serial killer Hubert Geralds Jr. is notorious for having murdered five women in Chicago between 1994 and 1995. He used drugs, especially crack cocaine, to entice them, and then he strangled them using a method known as the "Guardian Angel Chokehold". In 1995, Geralds was taken into custody following the discovery of Mary Blackman's body in a trash can. He admitted to all six killings during his trial, and in 1998 he received a death sentence. However, in 2000, prosecutors overturned the murder conviction of Rhonda King because DNA evidence connected her death to that of Andre Crawford, another serial killer. Geralds stayed on death row until 2003, when his sentence was commuted to life in prison without the possibility of release by then-Governor George H. Ryan. According to his defense lawyer, he had mental health conditions like paraphilia and brain damage that influenced his behavior. He is presently incarcerated in Menard Correctional Center in Illinois for a life sentence without the possibility of release.

Millicent “Peanut” Jones (25 years old) - found deceased on June 12, 1995
Mary Blackman (42 years old) - found deceased on June 17, 1995
In addition to these murders, Geralds attempted to murder another female sex worker who managed to escape.
Arrest and Trial
Geralds was arrested on June 18, 1995, after the body of Mary Blackman was discovered in a trash bin at a residence shared with Geralds’ family. His sister reported her suspicions about him to the police. During interrogation, Geralds confessed to all six murders he was charged with.
His trial began shortly after his arrest and lasted three weeks. The prosecution presented evidence of his confessions and linked him to the murders through DNA evidence in one case. On January 9, 1998, he was sentenced to death for the murders.
However, in February 2000, prosecutors vacated the conviction for the murder of Rhonda King due to DNA evidence linking her death to another serial killer named Andre Crawford. Despite this exoneration for one murder charge, Geralds remained on death row until January 11, 2003 when then-Governor George H. Ryan commuted his sentence to life imprisonment without parole.
Mental Health Defense
During his trial, Geralds’ defense attorney argued that he suffered from mental health issues including brain damage and paraphilia – a condition characterized by intense sexual urges towards atypical objects or situations – which contributed to his actions. Expert testimony suggested that Geralds had an IQ below the threshold considered mentally retarded.
Current Status
As of now, Hubert Geralds Jr. is serving a life sentence without parole at Menard Correctional Center in Illinois under identification number B39967.
