Details of the Crime

He claimed that he “snapped,” resulting in him pushing Stilwell down the basement stairs and subsequently strangling him to death.
Following the murder, Tweedly attempted to conceal his actions by dismembering Stilwell’s body using an ax purchased from Walmart. He disposed of the remains in different locations: arms and legs were dumped into a river while the head and torso were discarded in a wooded area. Afterward, he attempted to destroy evidence by burning items related to the crime in his backyard fire pit.
Investigation and Confession
The investigation began when Stilwell’s family reported him missing after he did not respond to messages or show up for work. A teenage girl discovered parts of his dismembered body floating in a river, prompting police involvement. Investigators traced back to Tweedly through information provided by friends who knew about his connection with Stilwell via Grindr.
Upon executing a search warrant at Tweedly’s home on September 25, police found evidence consistent with his confession—marks on the basement floor believed to be from an ax used during dismemberment as well as charred remnants of clothing and other items in the fire pit.
Tweedly’s confession included details about how he tried to clean up after the murder and expressed remorse over his actions. An autopsy later confirmed that Stilwell died from strangulation.
Previous Legal Issues
This is not Tweedly’s first encounter with law enforcement; he has a history of violence that includes a domestic violence charge from 2015 where he assaulted a former boyfriend. This pattern raises concerns about his mental health and stability leading up to this incident.
Current Status
As of now, Robert Dale Tweedly is awaiting trial for these serious charges. His next court date is scheduled for early January 2025, during which it will be determined if he is competent to stand trial following psychiatric evaluations.
