4 pence was the price at the time for the unfortunates in the Whitechapel to rent a room for the night.
All of the Jack the Ripper victims in 1888 we’re renting rooms such wat and at least two were on the hunt of an extra 4 Pennie’s to be able to sleep before being murdered by Jack the Ripper.
This is for a silver coin from 1888, of 6 pence.
The four penny coffin or coffin house was one of the first homeless cheaters created for the people of central London It was operated by the Salvation army during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to provide comfort and aid to its destitute clients.
