Letter/envelope set from the 14-year-old Florida school shooter.
This auction is for a letter from Florida school shooter Tronneal Mangum. On 1/27/1997, a 14-year-old Tronneal Mangum shot and killed a 14-year-old classmate. The shooting took place outside the West Palm Beach Conniston Middle School, after an apparent argument over a wristwatch. The pair had a history of clashes leading up to the shooting. Tronneal Mangum was arrested, but due to his age prosecutors couldn't seek the death penalty. Instead, prosecutors went for the next best thing and had Tronneal Mangum sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, deeming a 14-year-old boy, who was not yet old enough to buy cigarettes, alcohol, or vote, was without any hope of rehabilitation. In 2016, a County Circuit Judge approved a 40 year sentence following a 2012 Supreme Court ruling that juveniles couldn't receive automatic life without paroles sentences.
ITEM DESCRIPTION: The missive is three pages on three sheets, dated 7/17/2007, and signed, "Tron." In the opening of the letter Mangum mentions "falling" into so metal and getting a scar on his face. Generally, when an inmate gets into an altercation a response such as this is given to injuries. Not sure if that's the case here, but it sure sounds like it. The original mailing envelope is postmarked but the date is not legible. The letter and envelope come inside a protective magazine sleeve and have been stored flat.
