Steven felled little 12-year-old Samantha Detzler of Lansing, Michigan in his car before unceremoniously dumping her body along a rural Clinton County road.
Samantha’s disappearance from her grandmother’s Lansing home on February 19, 2005 sparked a massive 5-day search for the blond seventh-grader until her body was found on February 24, 2005.
The case drew national media attention and at least $9,000 was raised to help the family with funeral costs.
Steve was facing a sentence of between 25 years and life in prison after entering a guilty plea to second-degree murder. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder to avoid going to trial and being found guilty of first-degree murder. By eliminating the possibility of mandatory life, the sentence is effectively reduced to LWPP. When he is eligible for parole, the State Parole Board will decide, but the Judge forewarned him that he would vehemently object.
“You are the type of individual that should never be allowed to mingle in society,” the judge said.
